Spots or Debris On Sensor

Sony A7 CMOS Sensor Has Spots, Dust, Dirt, Or Debris On It:

Over time or when using your Sony A7 camera in dusty environments you may see dirt or debris on the front CMOS imaging sensor. These spots can show up on your images or video.

What You Can Do:

Normally the debris on the front sensor is fairly simple to clean and remove. The first thing to do is try using an air bulb. These bulbs blow air which will loosen up dirt and debris on the sensor. If that doesn’t work, we would then recommend using specially made sensor cleaning swabs. These swabs are made of a special material that will clean the sensor without scratching it. It is important that you are very careful when cleaning the sensor of your camera so that you don’t scratch or damage the surface coating.

How We Repair It:

Cleaning and servicing the sensor on your A7 camera is a common service that we provide. We utilize all of the special solutions and cleaning swabs to professionally clean all of dirt and debris off of the sensor. This service is always included whenever we do any repairs to your camera. If there is nothing wrong with your camera but you would like your sensor and camera cleaned and serviced, we provide this service for a nominal charge.

LCD Screen Is Cracked Or Scratched

Sony A7 LCD Display Screen Is Cracked, Scratched, Or Is Not Coming On (Dead)

LCD problems usually occur after your camera has been dropped, subjected to impact, or has experienced some sort of excessive moisture or liquid damage. The symptoms that you’ll typically see are: a cracked or shattered look, a totally black screen, or a distorted picture.

What You Can Do:

If your screen is cracked or damaged unfortunately the only way to fix this is to physically replace the LCD screen. There are things that you can do to protect your LCD screen from being scratched or damaged. First thing is to always store your camera in a protective camera case. Using a screen protector can also help protect your LCD screen from scratches. With this type of problem, prevention is the only way to stop this part of the camera from being damaged.

How We Repair It:

This is a fairly straightforward repair. We replace the LCD screen and then fully clean and service your camera. We only use original Sony parts with this repair. We have seen generic screens out there which can be cheaper however, they are inferior in picture quality and durability.

Note: To learn more about generic parts check out our article: Are counterfeit parts being used on your camera?

Power problems, Dead won’t come on, or Doesn’t fully power up

Sony A7 Not Powering Up And Is Dead, Powers Up With Limited Functionality, No Power:

One of the problems that we sometimes see with the Sony A7 cameras are power problems. When you put a power source on your camera (battery or external power adaptor) it sends a singular voltage to the internal power circuits in the camera. These circuits send various voltages out to the different parts of the camera. If one of power circuits is compromised your camera will have problems powering up properly. We have also seen power issues after a camera has been dropped or subjected to moisture damage.

What You Can Do:

If you were using an external power source when the problem started occurring, immediately discontinue use of that power source. Try a fresh battery and check the functionality of the camera. If it seems to work with your battery, our recommendation would be to permanently discontinue use of that external power source. External power sources have been a big source of power related issues with the Sony A7 camera. Before using any external power source make sure to research and check any reviews on that particular product. If you are still having problems after trying a freshly charged battery, that means the problem is being caused by an internal circuit.

How We Repair It:

When we receive your Sony A7 camera, we take it apart and check the power circuits of the camera to determine where the problem is. Once an estimate is approved, we replace the defective parts and fully clean, service, and check over all functionality of the camera.

Note: It is impossible to diagnose a power problem without taking apart the camera. If a shop gives you an exact estimate without looking at it they are not being very truthful with you. You can protect yourself from these types of dishonest practices. Check out our Bait And Switch Article.

Lens Mount Is Loose

Sony A7 Front Lens Mount Is Loose When Lens Is Attached:

The front lens mount is loose and wiggles even when the lens is firmly attached to the camera mount. The lens doesn’t seem tight on the front of the camera.

What You Can Do:

This problem usually occurs when mounting large heavy lenses to the camera without the proper support. We recommend always using a lens collar bracket that will allow you to directly mount the lens to the tripod. This puts more support on the heavy lens instead of the light weight body. Unfortunately if it is already loose it will need to be repaired.

How We Repair It:

The most common reason that this happens is that there are internal screws that hold the lens mount to the frame of the camera body. The entire camera must be disassembled in order to gain access to these screws. Once disassembled we are able to tighten the lens mount screws and firmly secure the lens mount. While your Sony A7 is apart we fully clean and service the entire camera.

Mode Dial, Exposure Dial, And Adjustment Knobs Not Working Or Are Intermittent

Problem With Picture Mode Control Dial, Exposure Control, Adjustment Knobs, Or Function Buttons Are Not Working Or May Be Intermittent:

The knobs, dials, and buttons on your Sony A7 camera are a highly used part of the camera and for the most part are very reliable. An issue that we see with these cameras are that when using these controls you may have a situation where they are flaky or are not responding to your input.

What You Can Do:

Once you see that the buttons, knobs, or controls are starting to have performance issues, take this as your warning that these controls are on their way out and will only get worse to the point of complete functionality loss and will not work anymore. Get through your shoot or season and get your Sony A7 sent in for us to take a look at it.

How We Repair It:

We identify what part or parts of the camera need to be repaired or replaced and then call you to let you know what’s going on. Once an estimate is approved we will repair or replace the defective or worn parts. We also fully check over the entire camera to ensure that everything is functioning back to 100% spec. Your A7 will also be cleaned and serviced while in for these repairs.

Tripod Mount Is Stripped

Sony A7 Tripod Mount Is Stripped Or Broken:

A problem that we sometimes see with the Sony A7 camera is that the tripod mount is stripped. If you look closely at the tripod mount you could possibly see that the threads are flattened, stripped, or mashed down. This typically occurs because of over tightening the tripod plate on the camera or if the camera has suffered impact while mounted on a tripod.

What You Can Do:

First of all to prevent this from happening, never over tighten the tripod mount on your camera. Once you feel that the tripod mount is starting to feel stripped (tripod screw just turns and turns without it getting any tighter) we strongly recommend that you discontinue mounting it on to the tripod. We have seen situations that if you have a heavier lens on your A7 it may pop off of the tripod plate which intern would cause a severe impact.

How We Repair It:

If the tripod mount socket is stripped, most of the time this is a very straightforward repair where we replace the tripod mount. If an impact has caused the damage to the tripod mount, it is possible that the part of the camera where the tripod mount screws to is damaged. We very carefully inspect this area of the camera and would recommend replacing that part as well if needed.

SD Memory Card Reader Doesn’t Work Or Card Doesn’t Lock In Or Stay In The Slot

SD Card Slot Is Not Working Or Won’t Read SD Card:

There are 2 problems that we primarily see with the SD card reader. One is the card won’t click or lock into place. The other problem is when you put an SD card inside the card reader it doesn’t read or write to the SD card properly and it may also show an error.

What You Can Do:

If you are having problems with the card reader in the camera, the first thing to try is another SD card. Another thing you can try if you are able to is to reformat the memory card. If you are continuing to have problems then the camera will need to be sent in for repair.

How We Repair It:

Most of the time the SD card slot PCB will need to be replaced. We properly diagnose and confirm the issue and let you know the problem. If we find that the SD card slot board is the problem, we will replace it with a new part.

Shutter Is Stuck

Sony A7 Front Shutter Curtain Is Stuck In The Closed Position And Will Not Open:

A problem that we sometimes see is the front shutter that covers the CMOS sensor is stuck in the closed position. The shutter will not reset back to its normal operation either when you initially power it on or when you are physically trying to take a picture.

What You Can Do:

We have heard of situations that by hitting or jarring the camera you can unstick the shutter. We do not recommend that you hit or jar the camera in anyway. There are very sensitive parts in the camera that can be damaged by any sort of impact.

We recommend power cycling the camera. Remove the battery and then reapply the battery and then power it on. Doing this causes the camera to go into a system check/reboot which can ultimately cause the shutter to unstick. We do not recommend trying this more than three times.

How We Repair It:

We carefully inspect the shutter block assembly and associated drive circuitry and then report back to you with your estimate. Once an estimate is approved, we repair or replace (depending on what we find) the defective part or parts of the camera. There are times that by simply unsticking the shutter will fix this issue.

Dropped or Impact Damage

Sony A7 Dropped Or Impact Problem:

Your Sony A7 has been dropped or has experienced some sort of impact damage. There are typically no two drops that are the same. You may have dropped it on hard concrete or soft carpet. It may have landed on the front lens area or it may have sustained damage elsewhere. Another variable is how high it was dropped from or how hard the impact was?

What You Can Do:

The first thing to do is to remove power, look over the camera and inspect it very well. If there is a part or parts of the camera that are broken off and hanging by a wire harness or flexible circuit board, I would not try to power it back on and continue using it. The exposed wiring may short the internal circuitry of the camera and cause more damage.

If you do not see any visible damage or just see a scuff or two, then attach your power source and turn power back on. We recommend carefully checking all functions of the camera. You don’t want to be in a situation where you are on an important shoot and something doesn’t work properly.

How We Repair It:

Impact damage is impossible to diagnose without physically examining the camcorder. Your A7 camera will need to be sent in to assess the damage. Once we receive your camera we look it over and closely inspect all areas of the unit notating the areas of damage. Your camera will have to be taken apart during this process.

Once an estimate is approved and depending on what is wrong we will replace the damaged parts or assemblies of your camera. We also check all functionality and then clean and service the camera. The goal is to return your Sony A7 back to you as if nothing has ever happened.

Water or Liquid Damage

Water or Liquid Damage, Something Was Spilled Inside Your Sony A7 Camera:

Some sort of liquid substance was spilled on your Sony A7 or it may have been submerged in water. We have also seen many situations where there has been excessive moisture or rain that has gotten into the camera. Water or liquid damage can be straightforward or a very tricky thing to fix. There are typically many variables that come into play like how much water got into it, was it submerged, and how long has the liquid been in the camera for. Also, where did the liquid enter from? The Sony A7 is not watertight and there are many ways that liquid can get into it.

What You Can Do:

The first thing to do is to immediately remove power and remove anything that may be connected to it like media, memory cards, external microphones and so on. Look the camera over and inspect it very well. Try and dry off any moisture that you see around the camera. Do not attempt to try and use the camera for at least 48 hours.

After you have given sufficient time for things to dry out, reconnect power to the camera and check over all functionality. If you notice any abnormal functionality, immediately discontinue use and disconnect power. If after thoroughly testing your camera all checks fine, you may continue using it however you may want to be cautious and always have a backup with you in case it fails.

Note: As a preventative thing you can do, we recommend that you do not store any liquids like drinks, water bottles, or sunblock in the same bag or case that you carry your camera in. We see a lot of cameras come in because something that was put in the camera bag had spilled or leaked on the camera.

How We Repair It:

Water or liquid damage is impossible to diagnose without physically examining the camera, so your Sony A7 will need to be sent in to assess the damage. Once we receive your camera we look it over and closely inspect all areas of the unit notating the areas of damage. Your camera will have to be taken apart during this process.

Once an estimate is approved and depending on what is wrong we will replace the damaged parts or assemblies of your camera. We use special chemicals to neutralize oxidation and corrosion in the camera. The goal is to return your camera to you as if nothing has ever happened.
