Picture Problems On Playback, Pixelating, Lines or Bars In The Picture

Canon XHA1s Playback Picture Problem:

Here is a list of issues pertaining to this problem: Video freezes and goes blank, plays and stops, dropped frames, audio drops or cuts outs, skips and jumps, play back glitches, clips dropping out, horizontal bars in the picture, blue or black screen, picture pixelates or brakes up. You may also see the error message: “ HEADS DIRTY, USE CLEANING CASSETTE “

Playback picture problems on your XHA1s can be caused by a multitude of things. These problems are typically isolated to the mechanical tape transport or VCR part of the camcorder.

The problem occurs when the video head drum is not able to read or write the information to the tape properly. A common misconception is that the video heads are bad and need to be replaced. Although we do replace video heads for this problem it is much more common that something much less severe is causing the issue like cleaning issues, alignment problems, or other parts in the mechanism that are worn and need to be replaced.

What Can You Do:

The first thing to do is make sure you are using new fresh tapes. If you continue to have  problems or have already been using new tapes, then try using a Sony or Panasonic head cleaner tape. When using a head cleaner tape put it in, press play, and run it for no more than 10 seconds. Try doing a new recording and check the results. You may run the head cleaner tape a second time if necessary however if the issue does not resolve then chances are there is a more severe issue.

How We Repair It:

Diagnosing playback picture problems can be straightforward or it can sometimes be tricky. An example of this is if the tape path looks to have a large oxide buildup from hundreds of hours of use, and the main source of picture problems are clogged head symptoms, then a minor service is in order. In that service we professionally clean the entire tape path including the video head drum as well as other parts of the camcorder.

On the tricky end of things, if the problem is very intermittent or sporadic, we may have to do more extensive testing and run the camcorder to diagnose what is happening. Our years of experience with the XHA1s also comes into play in helping us diagnose various picture problems that occur with these camcorders.

Once we diagnose the issues and an estimate is approved we clean, align, and replace the worn or defective parts that we find in the mechanical tape transport. We do lots of checks and testing and also play back multiple alignment test tapes. We do this to ensure that the repairs have been done properly and that the camcorder is reliable for years to come.

Wont Eject Or Load Your Tape Cassette

Your XHA1s Will Not Load Or Eject The Tape Cassette:

The problem that we sometimes see is that you may have an issue with the camcorder not loading a cassette properly. An example of this is when you latch the cassette mechanism the tape will not physically go down or may go down partially and get stuck. Or, when trying to eject the tape it will not fully eject or even try to eject at all.

Note: You may even see the “Remove The Cassette” or “Check The Cassette” error warnings accompanied with these problems.

What You Can Do:

Sometimes these issues can be caused by the mechanism hanging up. We recommend removing all power from your XHA1s and then reapply power. This will reset microprocessor as well as the tape mechanism. If you’re having problems where it’s not loading or accepting a tape, another thing that we typically recommend would be to try a different tape. If these things don’t work then your Canon XHA1s will need to be sent in to be looked at.

How We Fix It:

Once we receive your camcorder we test and check the operation of the mechanical transport (VCR section of the camcorder). We then diagnose the issues and call you letting you know the exact problem. There are times that more than one mechanical part is contributing to the problem. We also check all of the mechanical parts to make sure that they are in good working condition so that they don’t cause issues shortly down the road.

Once an estimate is approved we repair or replace the part or parts of the mechanical transport that are causing problems. We make sure to clean and service the entire tape transport including the video heads and perform all critical adjustments and alignments to the mechanism. When the repairs are completed, we perform all of the necessary testing to ensure that the repairs have been completed properly and that the camcorder is reliable again.

Remove The Cassette, Check The Cassette Error Warnings

Canon XHA1s Remove The Cassette And Check The Cassette Warning Errors Problem

The “REMOVE THE CASSETTE” and “CHECK THE CASSETTE” are warning errors that will pop up on your screen when the microprocessor or system control circuits of the camcorder detect that there is a problem with the VCR or mechanical tape mechanism portion of your camcorder. The “REMOVE THE CASSETTE” and “CHECK THE CASSETTE” errors are a generic way (similar to the check engine light on your car) for your Canon XHA1s to tell you that there is some sort of problem. The things that can cause these errors to pop-up are problems with the reel drive mechanism, loading mechanism, capstan motor not turning, and video head drum motor not spinning or can’t start up right. You may also be experiencing problems where the camcorder will not accept or load the tape, or maybe eating the tape.

Note: When you’re having these problems it is possible that the mechanism may also be causing damage to the tape.

What You Can Do:

The first thing that you can try is to power down the camcorder and remove power. Reconnect power, turn on, and continue to use. If the problem reoccurs we recommend trying a new fresh tape. If this works it is strongly recommended that you keep a close eye on things to make sure that the problem does not reoccur. If the problem immediately reoccurs or intermittently reoccurs then you are having an issue that will not fix it’s self or go away on it’s own.

How We Repair It:

Once we receive your Canon XHA1s camcorder we test and check the operation of the mechanical transport.

When we complete the repairs we perform all of the necessary testing to ensure that the repairs have been completed properly and that the camcorder is reliable again.

The Front Microphone Is Loose Or Broken Off

The Front On Camera Microphone MIC Is Very Loose Or Has Broken Off:

A very common issue that we see with the Canon XHA1s is the front on board microphone is very loose or has been broken off of the handle part of the camcorder. This is typically caused by putting excessive pressure on the front microphone. An example of this would be putting it in a camera bag that is too small for the camcorder. Another reason that this typically happens is due to an impact that hits the microphone.

Note: From new these microphones are designed to be a little bit loose. The reason that it’s designed this way is to create more isolation from the internal vibrations the camcorder. These internal vibrations come from the lens and the mechanical tape transport or VCR portion of the camcorder.

What You Can Do:

Depending on if the microphone had been broken off or is just very loose would determine your course of action. If it is very loose you will want to avoid the mic from fully breaking off of the camcorder. Using a little bit of electrical tape will help secure the microphone to the handle. DO NOT glue it.

If it was broken off you will possibly see two flexible circuit boards and a wire that connect the microphone to the circuit board inside of the handle. Be very careful as to not allow these flexible ribbon circuit boards to short out.

How We Repair It:

There is an assembly that holds the microphone to the handle. Due to impact or excessive pressure on the mic, this assembly can deform or break. When replacing this part, the handle will need to be removed off of the camera and disassembled. If the microphone wiring or flexible circuit board between the microphone and the handle are damaged they will also need to be replaced.

Power Problems, Dead Won’t Turn On, Or Doesn’t Fully Power Up

Not Powering Up And Is Dead Or Powers Up With Limited Functionality:

One of the problems that we sometimes see with the Canon XH A1s is power problems. When you put a power source on your camcorder (AC adaptor or battery) it sends a singular voltage to the internal power circuits of the camera. These circuits send many different and specific voltages to various parts of the camcorder. If one of power circuits is compromised you will have problems powering up the camcorder.

What Can You Do:

The first thing is to try a different power source. A different battery or AC power source. If you are still having problems, that means the problem is caused by an internal circuit.

How We Repair It:

When we receive your XHA1s camcorder, we take it apart and check the circuitry of the camcorder to determine where the problem is. Most of the time another circuit has a failure surging power from the internal power circuits which can blow or damage the power circuit. We identify the problem and once the estimate is approved we replace or repair the circuit that was damaged.

Note: It is impossible to diagnose a power problem without taking apart the camcorder. If a shop gives you an exact estimate without looking at it they are not being very truthful with you. We have an informative article about how you can protect yourself from this common practice. Dead Pixels In Picture When Filming In Camera Mode

Dead, Missing Pixels, Hot Pixels, Stuck Pixels or White Spots on Picture In Camera Mode

You may see a problem on your Canon XHA1s where you’re seeing tiny white specks on your picture while recording. These tiny white specks are known as dead, missing, hot, or stuck pixels. These dead pixels are typically more noticeable when filming in darker conditions. This issue can occur as the CCD sensor ages.

What You Can Do:

When you’re filming in camera mode, make sure that you manually set the gain control to its lowest setting. Turning up the gain puts more strain on the CCD sensor making it work harder. The result of this is more dead pixels or white spots showing up in your picture. If your footage was already recorded this way, there are ways to remove dead pixels or white spots in post production. We have seen many plug-ins on all of the major post production platforms to fix this.

How We Repair It:

Luckily there are electronic alignments that we can do to your XHA1s camcorder to remap the CCD sensor. Using the service manual and special alignment tools we are able to remap the CCD sensor and remove the dead pixels that you are seeing. Once done your picture will look crystal-clear with no dead pixels anywhere. While your Canon XHA1s is in for this repair we also fully clean and service it too.

No Or Black Picture, Camera Mode Picture Problems

No Picture, Black Screen, Or Distorted Picture In Camera Mode

A problem that we sometimes see with your Canon XHA1s camera is picture problems when you are in camera mode. Some of the symptoms that we see are a black screen, distorted picture, or no picture at all. These problems can be caused by various parts of the camcorder. The CCD sensor, lens, or video circuits have been contributing causes to this problem.

What You Can Do:

The first thing to try is remove all power from the camcorder, and then reapply power back on the camera. This will reset the circuits in the camcorder. If this doesn’t fix the problem, there’s not a lot else you are able to do. Unfortunately with this type of issue your Canon XHA1s would need to be sent in for repair.

How We Fix It:

Once we receive your Canon XHA1s camcorder, we will take apart, troubleshoot, and fully diagnose the problem. You’ll get a phone call from us letting you know the exact cost and problem.

Once an estimate is approved we will repair the problem area or areas of the camcorder replacing the necessary defective parts. On this repair it is very important to know why the problem has occurred. An example of this is if the CCD sensor went bad causing damage to the circuitry that drives the sensor. If you just repair the drive circuitry and not the CCD sensor the problem will recur. On the easier side of things we have also seen connection type problems where one of the connections between two circuit boards has popped out of it’s place (possibly due to an impact). Remaking the internal connections will usually fix this. Once repaired we make sure to check or perform all of the necessary alignments to ensure optimal operation of your XHA1s camcorder.

Firewire Port Doesn’t Work Or Connect To Your Computer

Fire Wire HDV DV Port IEEE1394 Doesn’t Work Or Connect. Can’t Import Footage.

One of the problems that we see with the Canon XHA1s camcorder is that when you plug in your firewire cable and connect it to your computer it’s not being recognized. Or your editing software is not seeing the connected camcorder and is therefore not able to upload the footage.

What You Can Do:

Check the FireWire settings on your camcorder. There are certain settings that can cause the camcorder to not transmit the DV FireWire signal. If you’re not sure about the settings you can also try resetting the camcorder back to its default settings. You may also want to check the import setting on your computer as well. If none of these suggestions work you may be having a problem with your camcorder

Note: We have a blog article that goes over how to safely connect the DV Firewire cable from your XHA1s to the computer to avoid damaging the firewire connector port or the internal circuitry in your XHA1s: How to safely connect and disconnect your FireWire cable to your camcorder.

How We Repair It:

This problem can be caused by a few different things. The most common reason to have DV firewire problems is due to the firewire port. The internal pins in the firewire port are very delicate and bend easily. If this is the case the firewire port on your XHA1s will need to be replaced. To get to the circuit board that has this connector on it, the camcorder will need to be almost completely disassembled.  The other reason that you could have DV firewire issues is due to the IEEE1394 firewire interface IC. The IEEE 1394 IC interface circuit controls the transmission of the DV signal. Unfortunately when this part is bad the main board would have to be replaced. Canon does not sell any of the components individually that make up this circuit and that is why the main board would need to be replaced. When the main board is replaced there are a series of electronic adjustments and alignments that would also need to be performed.

Headphone Jack is loose Or Doesn’t Work

Head Phone Jack Is Loose, Audio Cuts in and Out, Or It Doesn’t Work:

This problem can be either straightforward and constant or very intermittent when plugging in your headphones. The sound may either be cutting in and out, scratchy, or you maybe you just hear a buzz or no sound at all.

What You Can Do:

The first thing to do is make sure the headphone volume is turned up. Next, try another set of headphones. This will isolate the issue and tell you if the problem is with your headphones or your XHA1s camcorder. If the headphone jack feels loose or broken then unfortunately it will need to be replaced.

How We Fix It:

This is usually a straightforward repair. The internal contacts on your headphone jack wear out or the plastic around the contacts break. If you look closely at the port you could sometimes see that it is broken. We take apart the camcorder and replace the headphone jack. While we have the camcorder apart we fully clean and service the entire camcorder.

Dropped or Impact Damage

Canon XHA1s Dropped or Impact Problem:

Your Canon XH-A1s has been dropped or has experienced some sort of impact damage. There are typically no two drops that are the same. You may have dropped it on hard concrete or soft carpet. It may have landed on the front lens area or it may have sustained damage elsewhere. Another variable is how high it was dropped from or how hard the impact was?

What You Can Do:

The first thing to do is to remove power, look over the camcorder and inspect it very well. If there is a part or parts of the camcorder that are broken off and hanging by a wire harness or flexible circuit board, I would not try to power it back on and continue using it. The exposed wiring may short the internal circuitry of the camcorder and cause more damage.

If you do not see any visible damage or just see a scuff or two, then attach your power source and turn power back on. We recommend carefully checking all functions of the camcorder. You don’t want to be in a situation where you are on an important shoot and something doesn’t work properly.

How We Repair It:

Impact damage is impossible to diagnose without physically examining the camcorder. Your XH-A1s camera will need to be sent in to assess the damage. Once we receive your camcorder we look it over and closely inspect all areas of the unit notating the areas of damage. Your camcorder will have to be taken apart during this process.

Once an estimate is approved and depending on what is wrong we will replace the damaged parts or assemblies of your camcorder. We also check and realign all critical alignments of the camcorder. An example of this is your lens. Lenses can be very sensitive to impact and can easily be sent out of whack with a simple drop. The goal is to return your XH-A1s to you as if nothing has ever happened.

Water or Liquid Damage

Water or Liquid Damage, Something Was Spilled Inside Your Canon XHA1s Problem:

Some sort of liquid substance was spilled on your Canon XHA1s or it may have been submerged in water. We have also seen many situations where there has been excessive moisture or rain that has gotten into the camcorder. Water or liquid damage can be straightforward or a very tricky thing to fix. There are typically many variables that come into play like how much water got into it, was it submerged, and how long has the liquid been in the camera for. Also, where did the liquid enter from? The Canon XHA1s is not watertight and there are many ways that liquid can get into it.

What You Can Do:

The first thing to do is to immediately remove power and remove anything that may be connected to it like media, memory cards, external microphones and so on. Look the camcorder over and inspect it very well.  Try and dry off any moisture that you see around the camcorder. Do not attempt to try and use the camcorder for at least 48 hours.

After you have given sufficient time for things to dry out, reconnect power to the camcorder and check over all functionality. If you notice any abnormal functionality, immediately discontinue use and disconnect any power source from it. If after thoroughly testing your camcorder all checks fine, you may continue using it however you may want to be cautious and always have a backup with you in case it fails.

Note: As a preventative thing you can do, we recommend that you do not store any liquids like drinks, water bottles, or sunblock in the same bag or case that you carry your camcorder in. We see a lot of camcorders come in because something that was put in the camera bag had spilled or leaked on the camera.

How We Repair It:

Water or liquid damage is impossible to diagnose without physically examining the camcorder so your XHA1s will need to be sent in to assess the damage. Once we receive your camcorder we look it over and closely inspect all areas of the unit notating the areas of damage. Your camcorder will have to be taken apart during this process.

Once an estimate is approved and depending on what is wrong we will replace the damaged parts or assemblies of your camcorder. We use special chemicals to neutralize oxidation and corrosion in the camcorder. The goal is to return your camcorder to you as if nothing has ever happened.
